Thoughts for the day

The best way to get even is to forget.

Feed your faith and your doubts will starve to death.

God wants spiritual fruit, nor religious nuts.

Some folks were their halos much too tight.

Some marriages are made in heaven, but they all have to be maintained on Earth.

Sorrow looks back, worry looks around, and faith looks up.

Standing in the middle of the road is dangerous. You will get knocked down by the traffic from both ways.

Words are windows to the heart.

A sceptic is a person who when he sees the handwriting on the wall, claims it’s a forgery.

It isn’t difficult to make a mountain out of a molehill, just add a little dirt.

A successful marriage isn’t finding the right person — it’s being the right person.

The mighty oak tree was once a little nut that held its ground.

The tongue must be heavy indeed, because so few people can hold it.

To forgive is to set the prisoner free, and then discover the prisoner was you.

It’s all right to sit on your pity pot every now and again. Just be sure to flush when you are done.

You’ll notice that a turtle only makes progress when it sticks out its neck.

If the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, you can bet the water bill is higher.

You are richer today if you have laughed, given or forgiven.

The reasons why

Sometimes people come into your life and you know right away that they were meant to be there, to serve some sort of purpose, teach you a lesson, or help you figure out who you are or who you want to become. You never know who these people may be (possibly your roommate, neighbour, coworker, long lost friend, lover, or even a complete stranger), but when you lock eyes with them, you know at that very moment they will affect your life will affect your life in some profound way.

And sometimes things happen to you things happen to you that may seem horrible, painful, and unfair at first, but in reflection you find that without overcoming those obstacles you would have never realised your potential, strength, willpower, or heart.

Everything happens for a reason

Nothing happens by chances or by means of good luck.

Illness, injury, love, lost moments of true greatness, and sheer stupidity all occur to test the limits of your soul. Without these small tests, whatever they may be, life would be like a smoothly paved, straight, flat road to nowhere. It would be safe and comfortable, but dull and utterly pointless.

The people you meet who affect your life, and the success and downfalls you experience, help to create who you are and who you become.

Even the bad experiences can be learned from. In fact, they are probably the most poignant and important ones. If someone hurts you, betrays you, or breaks your heart, forgive them, for they have helped you learn about trust and the importance of being cautious when you open your heart.

If someone loves you, love them back unconditionally, not only because they love you, but because in a way, they are teaching you to love and how to open your heart and eyes to things.

Make everyday count

Appreciate every moment and take everything that you possibly can for you may never be able to experience it again.

Talk to people you have never talked to before, and actually listen.

Hold your head up because you have every right to.

Tell yourself you are a great individual and believe in yourself; if you don’t believe in yourself, it will be hard for others to believe in you.

Create your own life and then go out and live it with absolutely no regrets.

The one we call friend

And after all had been created and was arranged, He looked down upon the people and said, “I cannot be there to comfort them in their sorrow, I can’t be there to wrap my arms around them. I am here and they will feel my presence but they’ll need something more.”

He paused and said, “I will create for them someone they can see and touch, I will make this person understanding and compassionate, thoughtful and caring.

“She won’t need to be overly intelligent, just sensitive to others needs.

“She will have a warm heart and gentle hands and all the time in the world, or so it will seem to those she comforts.

“Time will mean very little to her it will never be too late nor too early.

“She will be a very blessed individual and many will love her and come to her door often.

“She will have to be something very special to take my place because I love my children very much.

“I want them to have only the best for they will have many trials and will need a strong shoulder.”

And so he created this individual after much thought and time. Then He said, “I must give her a name,” he paused for a moment more and then said,” One of my greatest creations, I shall call her a Friend.”

Taking it easy

The most common line that’s used by youngsters today is “take it easy”. One wonders whether in practical life it is so easy to ‘take it easy’? Because a burdened mind can never experience tru happiness.

In today’s conditions, the ability to take yourself and everything around you lightly is perhaps the number one capability to cultivate. There is a vital need to develop the inner powers to ‘take it easy’, come what may.

The state of a person’s mind depends upon his/her attitude towards people and objects present, and on the events occurring around him/her. There is also a well-known saying: “You cannot change events, but you can change your attitude towards them.”

Yet when actual situations arise, attitudinal change is difficult because of the mind-set already formed. That is why it is said ‘as you think, so you become’.

The word ‘light’, in the spiritual sense, also means enlightenment that dispels the inner darkness of ignorance, illusion, doubt and confusion. It enables us to visualise things in their true form. At the root of our attitude lies our belief system.

The biggest flaw in our belief-system today is body-consciousness, that is identifying oneself with the mortal body instead of the immortal entity called ‘Soul’ that we truly are.

This identity-crisis is the mother of all the crises. The eternal being, the soul, is a sentient entity, an imperishable point of light, whose original innate qualities are love, peace, happiness and bliss.

So, as long as we remain established in the state of soul-consciousness and use our body as an instrument, we will remain light and easy, making everyone around us feel the same.

Staying positive

In any crisis, be it personal, professional, medical, educational, one common advice that’s given by everyone to the affected person is ‘Be Positive’. Is it so easy to be positive? Well, the one who experiences it would have a better say on this. All of us are well aware of the fact that negativity produces wasteful thoughts and increases the number and speed of our thoughts, and consequently, the quality of our life.

On the other hand, self-realisation or soul-consciousness brings home the truth that the soul’s original qualities of love, peace, happiness and bliss are all non-material, like the soul itself. Even the negative traits or perversions like ego, anger, hatred, jealousy or the stresses and strains produced by these vices are non-material in nature. An inner journey is therefore an essential prerequisite for enjoying a happy external journey through this life and beyond.

Self-realisation enables us to easily let go of the past. Instead of regretting, it enables us to gain valuable experience from our past mistakes and increase our powers of tolerance and patience. When one begins to learn from mistakes, the meaning of the saying ‘everything happens for the best’ becomes clear. A strong will-power to learn from the mistakes enables one to transform a situation of possible failure into that of success will always keep us in good spirits, which in turn would always keep us light, happy and positive under all conditions.

Pause, Think, then Respond

Have you ever wondered sometimes that the situations would not have turned from bad to worse, if you or some other person had ‘responded’ to the situation calmly, rather than letting things out of control by ‘reacting’ under the influence of surrounding environment or even emotions like anger, worry, tension, pressure, to get the solution faster without thinking? When we come out of the situation, most of us wonder what happened to us at that point of time. How did we make such choices/decisions?

We start feeling that it was so simple to give a natural response, and yet we did not use our common sense.

If we pause for a moment and look at all such situations in life, we can easily see that it was not the external situation that disturbed us, but it was our inability to handle the situation that really disturbed us. These disturbances made us react rather than respond.

Few people come out of this disturbed state immediately in seconds, few within three to four hours, while others may even take days. So imagine how many choices and decisions we make during this recovery phase and the kind of additional complications it causes.

Since we cannot control external situations, we should create a calm and stable mind with wise intellect, in order to discern situations well, and respond to them with ease. This can be achieved easily by regular practice of ‘Rajyoga’, which helps us to attain a yogic state of mind, leading us to the path of happy and harmonious life.
