Delete Your Oldest Tweets Using Twitter Archive Eraser

Delete Your Oldest Tweets Using Twitter Archive Eraser

Looking for the awesome Twitter Archive Eraser?

Twitter Archive Eraser allows you to automatically delete tweets in bulk from your timeline, or erase your whole twitter archive if you would like so.

Several tools exist to help you delete your old tweets but, most of them do not work properly, if at all, due to Twitter API’s limitations. Twitter imposes a limit of 3200 tweets (the more recent ones that is) that an application can access.

Twitter enabled the option for users to download their whole archive of tweets, which contains among other things the IDs of all the tweets of a user: the exact piece of information that can be used to erase tweet.

Thus, a simple application called “Twitter Archive Eraser” developed by Martani Fakhrou that helps you delete the oldest tweets from your timeline, or erase the whole archive too if you would like so.

Download and setup the Twitter Archive Eraser app by visiting the link given below:

There is two kinds of download app available:

  • Standalone (portable) version: This version requires no installation and can be run directly.
  • Installer version: The installer takes care of downloading the required libraries (.NET framework etc.), and installs the application to the start menu.

How to use “Twitter Archive Eraser”

The application is the simplest possible, it works in 3 steps: authenticate Twitter; select which tweets you want to delete; erase them.

Step 1

In this step, you give Twitter Archive Eraser access to your twitter account so that it can delete the tweets you select. This works by providing a PIN number that twitter provides after the authentication.

Note: You need to accept sharing several statistics to use Twitter Archive Eraser.

Delete Your Oldest Tweets Using Twitter Archive Eraser

Step 2

After you download your Twitter archive (from https://twitter.com/settings/account) and you can load it directly as a zip file into Twitter Archive Eraser.

You can select which period of time you want to delete tweets from (grouped by month).

Step 3

Once you have selected the months, you are now presented with all the tweets in this period of time. By default, all the tweets are marked for deletion, if you want to keep any specific tweets, just uncheck them as shown in the following picture.

You can use regular expressions to filter specific tweets to check/uncheck them (you can click the “Erase?” checkbox on top to check uncheck all the filtered tweets).

You can also choose the degree of parallelism you want: that is how many tweets Twitter Archive Eraser deletes at a time: the more the better. Notice however that this parameter is limited by your network speed.

You can pause/resume the deletion process and check/uncheck tweets in between.

Delete Your Oldest Tweets Using Twitter Archive Eraser

Common filtering expressions

Use the following filtering expressions (without quotes “”) to search for:

  • Retweets: “^RT”
  • Replies: “^@\w+”
  • Reply to user martani_net: “^@martani_net”
  • Mentions: “@\w+”
  • Mentions of user martnai_net: “@martani_net”
This will possibly return Retweets also
  • Tweets containing a number with 4 digits or more: “\d{4}”
  • Tweets containing the word ‘hello’: “hello”

You can find the code of the application on github: https://github.com/martani/Twitter-Archive-Eraser. Developer mentions that all the Twitter logic is done using the excellent LinqToTwitter library.

Sadly, this app works only with Windows OS and yet developer is not further planning to develop this app for any other OS like Mac or linux. But don’t worry you can use apps like VMware or VirtualBox to switch to Windows and use the Windows apps.

How to Use #Hashtags Efficiently on Facebook?

How to Use #Hashtags Efficiently on Facebook?

After Twitter, the social media giant Facebook has adopted Hashtags. Most people, especially business owners, are particularly excited as well as confused about the proper usage of this new Facebook feature. You too can easily get carried away, and #start #overusing #or #misusing #hashtags. So to make sure that you do not get carried away like this here is an end to end guide for the proper usage of Facebook hashtags.

What are Hashtags and how they work?

In simple words, adding hashtag before a word or phrase (without spaces) makes it clickable in your status. Consider the status, “It’s one of my #writingQuirks.” Now if you click on #writingQuirks, Facebook will show you all the posts that used the hashtag #writingQuirks and therefore you will have all the related posts to browse through. It’s worth noting that post marked as private won’t show up in the search results. You can also bookmark hashtags to keep an eye on interesting topics.

Why Should You Use Hashtags for Marketing?

There are literally billions of posts on Facebook daily. So how to you plan to get your target customer's attention when you can’t even reach them? With so much competition, even a slight change in your content strategy can give you a huge edge over others.

How can Hashtags benefit your business?

1. Get New Audience:

When you add a hashtag to your posts, you make your post visible to all users who are searching for that subject even when they aren’t directly connected to your page. Now you have a completely new audience that you can target easily. In addition they are interested in your topic as they have searched for it.

Moreover, you can search for topics relevant to your business and provide your expert suggestions in conversations or as comments. This is easy marketing to gain more customers. Hashtags can lower the effort required to search for new audience that can be potential leads.

2. Promote Your Brand Effectively:

Creating unique hashtags for your Facebook page can help you amplify your promotion process. Face the reality no one would want to share a long post solely promoting your product.  You can break down your product information into several smaller easy to share posts marked with the same hashtag. This ensures that your information is shared in larger numbers and is still filed under a common tag.

3. Think Cross Platform:

The most fascinating feature of Facebook hashtags is that it feeds you results not only from Facebook but from Twitter, Instagram, Google+, Pinterest and LinkedIn as well. So you can market your ideas across several social media platforms, still all your posts will be linked together. So even if you post an update on Google+, you can get responses from Facebook or Twitter. Isn’t it amazing?

#HashtagTips

  • Use short hashtags #MyBlog.
  • Avoid long and complicated hashtags like #seotipsforyourbusiness.
  • Capitalize the first alphabet of every word so that it #CanBeReadEasily.
  • Make sure that you create and share Facebook URL’s of hashtags.
  • Create custom hashtags for your business and use them regularly in your posts.
  • Create new hashtag for every product or event.
  • You can use hashtags #within your sentences too.
  • Limit hashtag usage to one or two in your posts.
  • Do not use spammy hashtags, only use those which are relevant to your post.

To sum it all, hashtags, if used correctly, can be really profitable to your marketing strategy. So make use of this cross platform feature to market your brand and see the difference.

The Best Times to Post on Social Media

The Best Times to Post on Social Media

Let’s not lie. Timing is huge.

Some people have wondered if it really matters at what time social media posts are made. Just think about it – If you post an incredible piece of content, but no one’s there to read it, how much has it accomplished? Post at the wrong time and accomplish nothing. Post at the right time and you could grow your online presence by leaps and bounds. It’s especially important if you’re doing social media marketing.

The following infographic from Fannit displays the best times to post on social media, including Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and blogs:

The Best Times to Post on Social Media
Summary:

Best times to post on Facebook:

  • Best times – Weekdays from 6-8AM and 2-5PM
  • Worst times – 10PM-4AM

Best times to post on Twitter:

  • Best times – 1-3PM, especially on weekends
  • Worst times – 8PM-8AM

Best times to post on Google+:

  • Best times – 9-11AM
  • Worst times – 6PM-7AM

Best times to post on LinkedIn:

  • Best times: 7-8:30AM, 5-6PM
  • Worst times – Monday and Friday, and 9AM-5PM

Best times to post on Pinterest:

  • Best times – Saturday morning, 2-4PM and 8-11PM
  • Worst times – 5-7PM and 1-7AM

Best times to post on Blogs:

  • Best times – Monday, Friday, and Saturday at 11AM
  • Worst times – 11PM-8AM

In order to reach the greatest number of people, choose carefully when you post on each social network that you’re on. Post at the right time and bump up your online presence to a high degree; post at the wrong time and you’ll fail to reach your audience.

But posting at the right time is not the one and only magical way to reach the masses. Also be sure to post content that is pleasing to those following you, post pictures that people will appreciate, as pictures typically perform better than text, use trending hashtags when possible, etc. All these things play a part in your effort to grow your audience and build your online reputation.

However, *this information is not enough*. You can’t be relevant to your community if you just follow general advice. You need to dig deeper and do the following:

1. Know Your Audience

Statistics about peak posting hours are useful, but a great post can be wasted if your target audience never sees it. Knowing when your customers are most active on each social media platform is crucial to your posting success.

Someone working in finance and a freshman in college have completely different schedules. Hone in on your market and reach your audience when they’re most likely to see your post. For instance, Twitter found that mobile users are nearly 3 times more likely to be on Twitter during their commute. They are also 1.2 times as likely to use Twitter during school or work hours.

How is this useful? Taco Bell knows that their strongest demographic is between the ages of 18-34. Even though Twitter engagement dies down later in the day Taco Bell may still post a tweet on Friday night knowing that many of their target audience will be coming home from a late night out, hungry for some munchies.

2. Tap into the Moment

Large media events present great opportunities for you to connect with your customers in real time. React in the moment and create a conversation with your followers. Great content isn’t always planned ahead.

Example: Oreo posted a great tweet about “Dunking in the Dark” when the lights went out during Super Bowl XLVII. Oreo’s quick reaction on social media produced a valuable opportunity that not only engaged Oreo’s consumer base, but also added to their image as a brand. Garnering 15,780 retweets, the post created a greater payoff for Oreo than their actual Super Bowl Ad.

Pay attention to live events and current pop-culture trends. Strike when the time is right and your post can have a much larger effect, whilst also creating a closer connection with your followers. But beware content still matters. Without the great tagline and content of the post, Oreo’s tweet may have fluttered rather than soared.

3. The Technology is there, Use it

Creating valuable content and perfecting its distribution is not easy, thankfully there are tools that can help.

Developers have made available hundreds of programs that can help simplify the process. Whether it be analytics or tracking or both. There’s a tool for nearly every problem one may face. Here’s a few to help you along the way:

Problem: I don’t know when my followers are online

SocialBro to see when your followers post and how far their influence travels. Find your strongest audience and grow your brand.

Insights Facebook has their own useful analytics tool see statistics on any of your brand pages.

SimplyMeasured a free Instagram analytics tool.

Problem: I’m too busy to remember when I should tweet during the day

Buffer can auto-schedule your tweets to best fit when your audience is online. Then export those optimal tweet times to SocialBro.

Problem: I want to keep a consistent reply rate to my followers on twitter but I have no way of tracking how efficient my response times are

Must Be Present works well to keep track of your Twitter response times. Let your customers know that you’re listening to what they have to say.

According to research from Lithium Technologies, 53 percent of users who tweet at a brand expect a response within the hour. This percentage grows to 72% when users post a complaint.

Problem: I can’t get my high quality event photos on social media immediately

Eyefi instantly transfers photos from your dslr camera up to your cloud storage.

Improving your Social Media strategy is an important first step in building a stronger relationship with your customers.

Happy posting!

What Happens to Your Social Media Profiles When You Die?

What Happens to Your Social Media Profiles When You Die?

One of life’s most perplexing existential questions gets a lot more complicated when you factor in social media.

While there’s no definitive answer to what happens to us when we die, Dan Shaffer at WebpageFX put together a visual guide to social media life after death. While Twitter will start deleting accounts after six months of inactivity, most other social networks won’t touch your profile unless specifically asked by a family member or an agent of law enforcement. Whether your account is deleted or deactivated, your data will be interred with your profile, and will typically only be unearthed if needed for a legal investigation.

Different sites require various forms of identification and proof of death to delete a profile, but Facebook allows you to turn a lost loved one’s profile into a memorial page. The memorialized timeline is accessible and searchable only to friends, who can still post and look at pictures. The profile won’t trigger birthday reminders, nor will it appear in “People You May Know” prompts, so friends will only see it on their own accord.

Facebook won’t delete profiles on its own, though, which raises another interesting question: When will the profiles of dead Facebook users outnumber those of the living? According to research by XKCD, that will happen around 2065 if Facebook stops growing, or around 2130 if its membership keeps expanding.

Now if only we could figure out if there was an Internet heaven or hell.

Happy 3rd Birthday Google+

June 28th 2014 marks the 3rd birthday of Google’s social networking platform Google+. At only three years old, it is still in its infancy yet it has faced the harshest of criticisms and ridicule at times of all the social networks. Heralded as Google’s competitor to Facebook, Google+ has not taken off as some would have predicted, especially with the might of corporate Google behind it. Nonetheless, the social network is still in the growth stage and has been tweaked in terms of design and functionality many times since its inception. Google+ has an attractive interface as many have commented but the problem is that few have all their peers on it in comparison to the likes of Facebook. Too often Google+, the social network is a place used by digital markets solely for search engine optimization purposes.

This infographic charts Google’s history with the world of social networking, what has worked and what hasn’t. It also compares Google+ to its largest rival Facebook in terms of different variables which makes interesting reading and it also attempts to address what is in the future for the social network.

New Changes to the Facebook News Feed

New Changes to the Facebook News Feed

Facebook has once again made some more changes to the ever-evolving News Feed. Users will notice a lot of differences between the feed they knew six months ago and the feed that they see today. This is because Facebook is trying to make sure you are seeing more of the content that is actually of interest to you while weeding out the things that are not.

On average, there are 1,500 stories that could show up in your personal News Feed every day. With Facebook's algorithm, though, you only see about 20% of them. Updates to the algorithm plus new designs come together to make a more personalized News Feed for each individual user.

So, what are the new changes you will be seeing?

Videos on Auto-Play

Several months ago, Facebook did some test runs of auto-play video ads. Now, over the next few months, users will begin to see more and more of these auto-play videos, including brand advertising, in their News Feeds.

The videos will play automatically, both on the desktop and mobile versions of the social network. There is no sound to the videos unless you click on them, which saves you from having to endure a cacophony from multiple videos playing at once.

Auto-play videos only include those uploaded directly to the site, not those shared from third-party sites like YouTube.

Bigger Images

Everyone knows that posts that include images get the most engagement from social media users. Now, the images that you carefully curate to go along with a post will get even more notice because they will appear larger in New Feeds.

Images now appear the width of the New Feed, making them much more impact and hard to pass up.

Quality Content

In order to make sure users are seeing more quality content in their News Feeds, Facebook changed the algorithm to allow more current events and news to appear. This change might make the social network a competitor for Twitter in the breaking news market and the conversations that come with it.

Increased Brand Content

Facebook has made some other tweaks to allow more brand content to reach a broader audience. Brands can tag one another in posts, allowing them to reach people who are following the other brands.

Reappearing Content

Users will also notice that they see the same posts in their News Feed even after they have read them. This is a way for Facebook to make sure that you are seeing content that could be a hot topic among their friends and family.

Fewer Spam Links

One of the things that irritates social media users most is clicking on a link and being taken to a page that is full of ads. Another new part of the algorithm helps prevent links to ad pages that are deemed spam by Facebook from popping up in News Feeds too often. They will still be there, but at least an attempt is being made to limit them for us.

There will always be changes made to our favorite social networks in an attempt to make sure users are getting the best experience. What changes are you happy to see on the News Feed?

How to Create the Perfect Password [INFOGRAPHIC]

With more and more of us shifting everyday tasks — banking, education, social interaction, even shopping for groceries — to the virtual world, securing our personal information has become more important than ever. One of the simplest ways to help protect our financial and other info from prying eyes and would-be identity thieves is to use a strong password. Yet many people take a decidedly casual approach to choosing a password, with potential disastrous results.

Having your password compromised is no laughing matter. More than half a million hackers have a go at cracking Facebook passwords every single day. In an effort to protect its users, the site gives specific tips for protecting both your Facebook account and any financial information you may have saved on the site — unsurprisingly, choosing a strong password is high on the list.

Facebook’s not the only place you have to worry about securing your financial info, of course. A 2013 investigation by Verizon found that, across 27 different countries, attacks on banks and other financial institutions account for a full 37% of data breaches. In 76% of these intrusions, the hackers simply used a weak or stolen password to access the system. Password theft is one thing, but if all that separates a would-be thief from millions of dollars is the name of someone’s pet gerbil, it may be time to beef up password protocol.

So what constitutes the “perfect” password? If you’re serious about security, a strong password will include a mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers, symbols, and even non-keyboard characters. It will be unique (using the same password for everything might be common, but it’s also spectacularly unsafe). It’s also greater than eight characters in length, contains arbitrary phrases made using numbers and letters (e.g., “b4D P4S$W0Rd”), but no complete words. And no matter how secure your password is, it’s made more secure by changing it regularly.

Strong, adequate, or weak, no password can protect against every possible threat. But by following our tips, you can help keep your social media accounts in your own hands, make your financial info safer, and encourage meddling thieves and hackers to seek easier prey.

Here is an infographic to help you protect yourself from losing your password, specifically from WhoIsHostingThis? a webmaster tool that lets you discover which web hosting company any site is hosted with.

How to Optimize Twitter SEO for Your Business

How to Optimize Twitter SEO for Your Business

It is undeniable that Twitter is one of popular social media websites. It offers fast information through 140 characters. Many companies start to pay attention to the use of Twitter for their business. They even create account for their company and share information about the company itself, the products, services and other related stuff.

You can use Twitter to promote your business. It allows you to post something short but has sharp information to keep in touch with your customer or gain new potential customers. Twitter is perfect place to keep your business heard by massive users on it. Even if you are new or a seasoned pro to Twitter, here we have simple ways to optimize your company’s Twitter profile through some simple SEO campaign. Fancy to know?  Here is how to optimize your Twitter and get better rank in Google’s eyes as well as promote your business.

Your account name and user name should reflect your business

One of the first things you will have to do when signing up for a Twitter account is to choose your account name and user name. While your account name will show up in your URL, your user name can be seen on your Twitter profile page. Even from here, you will have to consider how your choices will affect your SEO efforts. Choose an account name and user name that are relevant to your business. If you have a brand name, it is best to use that. Although your account name and user name do not necessarily have to be the same, it will be good if you can use the same name for both.

Optimize your bio

The Bio part in your Twitter page is where you will put the description or details about your business. Basically, it is your ‘about us’ page in Twitter. Unfortunately, you are limited to using only 160 characters so make sure that you use relevant keywords especially since this portion is indexed.

Write only quality Tweets

With limited characters available to you per tweet, it is important to consider what kind information you want to share, include all the details. Keep your tweet short and contain sharp information about your business, products or even just share piece of information that relate to your business. This action will give something valuable to your followers and customers. Keep in mind that quantity of tweets is not important as share a quality tweet.

Tweets are a form of linking, and linking can still affect your SEO campaign. While your account might be new and you manage to get a link from a site that has authority on Google, this will start to see an increase in your Twitter Profile’s popularity. If more people start to re-tweet your updates, this will help your site be seen as an authority on a topic, and help to build authority around your site and potentially increase its rankings in Google’s eyes.

Updated your Twitter account frequently

People like something fresh and new on a website. If your company account barely updates the status, potential customers will assume that you are out of business now or you stop the production and they will stop following and even unfollow your Twitter account. To avoid this situation, make sure you update your account frequently; with interesting information to make sure they keep visiting your account because they are curious about what information will you share next through the account.

Re-tweet someone else’s tweet

You can always find a certain information that relate to your business, maybe article from popular newspaper, quote from popular businessman or just tweets relate to your business written by other Twitter users. You can simply re-tweet it again as the opportunity to gain better ranking when it comes to Google search as well as build brand awareness. When your followers have interaction to your account do not forget to reply it and create warm interaction with them. This will keep the intention to your business and company well-maintained and of course attract the customers as well as new potential customers.

Market your Twitter page

This means promoting your Twitter page to other Twitter users. At the start, a lot of users will not have any idea that your Twitter account exists so promote it by putting up a Twitter button on your website if you have one, asking your customers to follow you, informing your customers through email, asking your followers in your other social media networks to follow you on Twitter as well.

Give the Twitterverse New Content

Just because you are on Twitter and you have a website does not mean you are guaranteed better search engine placement. Your best bet is to update your website frequently and tell Twitter about it. Every time you add a page or write a blog entry, be sure to tweet the URL of the new content. Tweeting the URL of your new content will help drive new traffic to your website, increase exposure, build a better online presence, and encourage search engines to crawl your site. If the content is really good, you may even get a few powerful retweets! In other words, Twitter can help spread the word of any website updates much quicker and to a much larger audience.

7 Reasons To Quit Facebook In 2014

7 Reasons To Quit Facebook In 2014

Feel less positive, have less real users, get bad effects to health, etc.! These are one of the 7 main reasons why we should quit Facebook – one of the best social networks.

Facebook is causing irritation.” Have you ever shouted or heard this statement before? If yes, how many times? We believe a lot, right. So why to delete Facebook? It’s because more and more people seems to get more tiredness of its social networking, especially the youth. There are dozens of irritation relating to Facebook in the previous year (2013). Even the company has admitted that the number of young people is using Facebook less regularly. Now, take a look at a couple of reasons that might mention us the reasons to delete Facebook in this year (2014).

1. No one truly wants to know about what happens to us.

Update statuses or sent birthday messages or post photos seem to receive less attention from Facebook users. Here is a typical example. Some says that the number of birthday messages is less than before. It can be explained that perhaps some people don’t take care of us. However, the truth is that this network has no longer attraction. Moreover, there are more and more social networks nowadays. Especially, the young people prefer some specific social networks i.e. post all statuses on Twitter or photos on Instagram.

2. Facebook is not private any longer.

Previously, we can select useful options in Privacy Settings that can help us hide on Facebook for some valid reasons. Nevertheless, now, it’s not right anymore because Facebook has restructured its searching form. Accordingly, the only way to ensure that no one can enter our profile is to block them. Or simply change our name so that the others can't search our real name on Search bar.

3. Our parents know about Facebook.

Facebook is no longer for the young people. Besides, the number of dads, moms, grandparents or aunts joining in Facebook is gradually increasing. It means that whenever posting any status or any photo, we will easily get our parents’ keen and curious eyes. Of course, they do that because they just want to take care of us. However, we have no freedom when using this social network.

4. We easily feel pessimistic when using Facebook.

According to a last study of the UVU Behavioral Science Department – Utah Valley University, more and more Facebook addicts feel unhappy in comparison with the happiest people out there. Using Facebook regularly can increase our loneliness as well as decrease our studying or other activities.

5. Ads are everywhere.

One of the other reasons to leave Facebook is Ads. At first, advertisements just appear on the right side of the screen. However, lots of pieces of ads have started sneaking in with each individual profile, home page. Even people create a new account and just use it for advertising. One more thing is that Facebook has applied some irritating ads out in December. So, whenever entering Facebook, some videos will be automatically played, but just tap on it to hear the voice. Is it the good news?

6. Our health will decrease.

Some scientists say that spending too much time on Facebook will cause some bad impacts on the users’ health, including the mind and the body. Moreover, we can easily get some symptoms as eating disorder and psychophysiological disorder or even be stressful, feel less positive, depression, etc. In addition, almost Facebookers are online at night. It makes the parts in the body work too much and leads to some bad cases about health.

7. The number of “real” friends is truly less.

Try to imagine! The total number of our friends in Facebook is about 1,000 people. Nonetheless, can we assure that we will receive all 1,000 messages on the birthday? Of course, not! Playing Facebook is rather similar to our real life. We just contact those guys, who are really familiar with us, right? Although Facebook proposes advanced searching tools, sometimes we can receive strange suggestions. How can we know that who are “real” and who are “virtual”? If we don't like making “virtual” friends, to stop playing Facebook is the good choice.

Six Alternatives to WhatsApp

Six Alternatives to WhatsApp

If you are uncomfortable about feeding your data to Facebook, here are some of the best alternatives for iPhone, Android and others

BY SAMUEL GIBBS

LONDON: Facebook has bought messaging app WhatsApp, which means those who have been avoiding feeding their data into the world’s biggest social network might think about switching to another instant messaging service.

As WhatsApp is based on phone numbers rather than usernames, Facebook has in effect just bought a list of hundreds of millions of phone numbers. “Currently, WhatsApp can change terms and conditions at any time, without notifying users, which many people who use this service aren’t aware of. Meanwhile, Facebook already has a very broad copyright license on people’s content and already shares your data with many other services,” explains St John Deakins, chief executive of online identity service Citizenme.

While WhatsApp is certainly the most high-profile text messaging replacement app in the UK, it is by no means the only horse in the race.

Line

WhatsApp’s biggest competitor is Line, a messaging app that lets users send text messages, images, video and audio, was well as make phone calls over the internet or video conference. The Line messaging app is available for almost every computer and mobile platform. Line has 350 million users globally, expanding rapidly from 10 million in December 2011 according to data from Statista. Line Corporation is head–quartered in Japan, a subsidiary of South Korea’s online content and search company Naver Corporation.

Kik Messenger

Another messaging app alternative, Kik Messenger sends texts, images and voice messages over a smartphone’s data connection avoiding mobile operator messaging charges. It also integrates a web browser into the application allowing users to browse content and share it directly with their friends. Kik is available on the iPhone, Android, Windows Phone, Nokia’s Ovi store and BlackBerry. Now with 100 million users globally, Kik was released in 2010 and quickly hit one million users in just 14 days.

BBM

BlackBerry’s Messenger is the grandfather of the phone instant messaging apps. BBM was released for both Android and the iPhone in September 2013 making it cross platform for the first time. BBM for iPhone and Android was downloaded 10 million times in the first day, with over 80 million users globally across all platforms by October 2013. BlackBerry announced that by December 2013 BBM had 40 million users of its iPhone and Android apps.

Viber

A messaging app that stated out life as a direct Skype competitor for free voice calling, Viber has expanded into a cross–platform messaging client and was recently bought by the Japanese e–commerce giant Rakuten for USD 900 million. Viber is available for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone, Samsung’s Bada and Nokia’s Symbian and Series 40, plus the desktop, making it one of the most widely available messaging apps. All users can send text, pictures and video messages using Viber, but voice calling and some other features are limited to the iPhone, Android and Windows Phone.

Google Hangouts

Google’s messaging strategy has historically been a bit of a mess with different messaging protocols across different services that could not communicate with each other. In 2013, Google launched Hangouts to unify its messaging platforms. Available on the desktop, Android and iPhone, Hangouts allows users to send text and images, as well as hold video calls and group messaging with read states and typing indicators.

Skype

Skype maybe known for voice and video calling, but it also integrates a solid instant messaging function. Available for Android, the iPhone, Windows Phone and BlackBerry, as well as desktops, home phones TVs and games consoles, Skype allows you to send text messages, images, videos, voice messages and send group messages.

The others

There are a plethora of other messaging apps out there, including WeChat — huge in China but yet to break big in the UK — Tango and TextFree, as well as Apple’s iMessage, which is baked into the iPhone and iPad, but is also available on Apple’s computers. Facebook also has two other messaging apps. Its Facebook Messenger app is available through the Facebook desktop site as well as mobile apps for iPhone and Android, while Instagram allows users to send photos publicly or privately. Snapchat, the ephemeral image sharing app, also allows users to send quick photo and text messages. Beyond traditional messaging there is also Twitter’s direct messaging feature, which can also be used as an instant messaging system, sending private messages to followers.

Social Media in a Nutshell [INFOGRAPHIC]

Social media is not just about keeping in touch with friends or posting photos of your lunch, it’s business — big business.

However, having a profile on every social media platform can become time consuming. So which one is best for you to invest your time in? Well, this arguably depends on what type of business you have.

LinkedIn positions itself as the largest professional network — it’s a serious place to hang out!

Pinterest seems to appeal to the designers, photographers and those looking to get their creative juices flowing.

Twitter will tell you that it’s easy to build an audience and following, and Facebook will probably say they’ve got the most users.

The above points are my personal experiences of each service — however to dismiss one as not relevant for your business could be costly, customers can be recruited on each and every platform with the correct strategy.

We are sure that you probably already know this and are already tweeting and posting away, but what you might not have in place yet is a text messaging service. Our experience is that the good old text message can complement a social media strategy very effectively — for example, what’s the best way to promote your new mobile app? You could consider sending a text message, with a link to download it so your audience can install it there and then.

The figures for mobile they are still staggering, according to the guys at Super Monitoring, 91% of the world’s population has a mobile phone and Ofcom research states that in the UK just over 150 billion texts were sent in 2011 alone. When you consider that 98% of all text messages are read (Frost & Sullivan), it’s no surprise that SMS is an incredibly powerful communication channel.

Also consider that only 22% of emails get read (Frost & Sullivan) and 84% of all email is spam (The Radicati Group). Text messaging produces 6 to 8 times higher engagement rates than email (Cellit).

So, embrace Social Media — it’s good to share. But do also keep in mind that mobile marketing can deliver a huge and immediate boost and return on promotions.
